Feminist Disney, "I don’t know if I’m asexual, or aromantic, or if...
"I don’t know if I’m asexual, or aromantic, or if I just haven’t met the right person yet. Might never find out. But either way, I don’t experience romantic attraction at this point in my life. And it irks me that all the Disney princess movies boil down to romance.
Portraying the male protagonist as just a love interest is offensive to men and women. To men, because it implies that a man is only good for his looks and riches. To women, because it implies that a man with looks and riches is what really matters.
Recent Disney movies have gotten better about this. Aladdin, Naveen and Flynn had an actual personality. Tiana and Rapunzel didn’t have ‘get a man’ as their ultimate goal (at least, not at the start of the film). But I’d like to see Disney take it one step further.
I’d like a Disney film in which romance isn’t the focus. A Disney film in which they don’t get together. A Disney film to change the idea that marriage is what everyone should strive for. A Disney film with different goals for the main characters. A Disney film in which people live their own lives.
That’s what a Disney princess (and prince) could be.”
