Merida is a princess, but she’s also the hero, and because she’s not openly into dudes, it leaves her open for people of any sexual orientation to project themselves onto her without feeling weird. Besides, the story isn’t about romantic love. It’s about the conflict between Merida’s duty to her family and her duty to herself with a focus on her relationship with her mom.

I gotta admit I started reading the EW’s article mentioned here and I didn’t think it was bad to say that a female protagonist of a children’s movie was queer. Maybe the writer’s heart was at a good place but his words weren’t the right ones.

It’s so cool that Merida is a character that shows young people that they don’t have to fit specific roles, and it’s cool that there’s a movie for kids in which the female protagonist cares about something else than romantic love. I can’t wait to see this film.
