Feminist Disney, I saw someone on my dash get freaked out because she saw ‘my big gypsy wedding’ (think that’s what it’s called) and she said she felt terribly bad for the gypsy women who weren’t taught about sex or knew what a penis was until after marriage. And I agree, but do you think it’s ok to judge this if it’s not our own culture? (also sorry this doesn’t have much to do with the current discussions on your blog)

i would say it’s not okay to judge anyone based on that show, it’s not exactly known for its accurate or respectful portrayals of irish travelers/walking people/roma/etc/whatever.  :P

I think the best thing to do is to follow cues from feminists or similarly likeminded people in the culture rather than assume things or judgments as outsiders.   It’s possible they have a different perspective on how sexuality and sexual education operates in their culture- it’s also possible that most of them agree it’s BS, and the problem isn’t the culture so much as a lack of access to public education or something, which makes judgment pointless when it’s a problem of means and mobility, not culture.
